John Wibberley with a patient at Dream Smiles Dental

Sound familiar?

Living with dentures that
let you down?

For too many people, dentures mean anxiety rather than confidence. The constant worry of movement, the discomfort of an ill-fitting lower plate, the feeling that your teeth might let you down at any moment. It doesn't have to be this way.

Lower denture moves when you eat or speak?
Denture moving when you eat, speak or laugh?
Avoiding certain foods because of how your denture feels?
Feeling self-conscious in social situations?

Meet John Wibberley

John is a Clinical Dental Technician with over half a century in the field. He began his training at Manchester Polytechnic in 1978 and has spent his career mastering the science and craft of well-fitting dentures.

After running his own laboratory, Portland Ceramics, for 16 years, John travelled to Japan to train under Professor Jiro Abe, the pioneer of suction-effective mandibular complete dentures. Today, he is one of only a small number of practitioners in the UK qualified to teach this technique internationally.

A more stable solution

Suction dentures: the science of
genuine stability

Traditional lower dentures struggle to stay in place because they cannot generate a seal against the gum. Suction dentures, developed using the SEMCD technique pioneered by Professor Jiro Abe in Japan, are designed to create a genuine suction seal. The technique improves stability for every patient. Whether a full seal is achievable depends on the individual anatomy of your mouth, and John will assess this at your consultation. In all cases, the result is significantly better than a conventional denture.

1

Precision Impression

John takes a functional impression that captures the full shape of your gum tissue, ensuring the denture base fits your anatomy precisely rather than a generic mould.

2

Neutral Zone Fabrication

The denture is shaped within your mouth's own neutral zone, the space where the tongue and cheeks exert equal pressure, so it stays stable during eating and speech.

3

Precision Fit and Seal

The finished denture creates a genuine suction seal against the lower gum. No surgery. No anxiety. Just a denture that functions the way it should.

Why patients choose suction dentures

A denture you can forget you're wearing

Improved stability. The suction seal holds the denture more firmly in place throughout the day.
No surgery required. Unlike implants, there is no incision, no healing time and no clinical risk.
Eat with confidence. Foods that were previously off-limits become possible again.
Speak naturally. The neutral zone fit means the denture works with your muscles, not against them.
Improves stability for everyone. Full suction depends on your anatomy, but the technique delivers meaningfully better retention than a conventional denture in every case.
Available for the upper arch too. Ask John about upper suction dentures at your consultation.

Suction denture fitting

"A genuine alternative to implants for suitable patients"

Whether a complete suction seal is achieved depends on the shape of your gum ridge. What John's technique guarantees in every case is a meaningfully more stable denture than you would get from a conventional approach. A consultation will establish exactly what is achievable for your anatomy.

The difference is visible

Craftsmanship you can see

Most people have never seen what a truly well-made denture looks like. John's work does not look like a denture. It looks like teeth. The comparison below shows a standard commercially produced set alongside one of John's completed cases.

Standard conventional denture - before John
Standard Denture

Uniform and commercial

Flat, uniform gum colour with little tissue detail. Bright, evenly-shaped teeth that look artificial at close range. This is typical of a standard, mass-produced prosthetic.

Lifelike in every detail

Natural gum stippling, subtle colour variation, realistic tissue contours and individually characterised teeth with natural translucency. Virtually indistinguishable from natural dentition at conversational distance.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before booking.

A Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) is a GDC-registered professional qualified to provide complete dentures directly to patients. While a dentist has broad clinical training, a CDT focuses entirely on the science and craft of prosthetic teeth. John has a special interest in dentures and has dedicated over half a century to this field, giving him a depth of knowledge and technical skill that is genuinely rare.
The technique improves lower denture stability for all patients. Whether a full suction seal is achievable depends on the shape of your gum ridge, which John assesses at the initial consultation. Patients with good ridge definition are most likely to achieve full suction. Those with severely resorbed ridges may not achieve a complete seal, but will still benefit from significantly better retention than a conventional denture. John will be honest with you about what is realistic for your anatomy before you commit to anything.
Suction dentures typically require three to five appointments: the initial consultation, one or two impression and record appointments, a trial fitting, and final delivery with any minor adjustments. John works methodically and will not rush the process, because a well-made denture made right first time is far better than a quick one that needs repeated adjustment.
Yes. Many of John's patients come to him having worn conventional dentures for years and having never found anything that worked well. The suction technique does not require you to be new to dentures. In fact, patients who have experienced the frustration of conventional dentures often appreciate the difference most acutely.
The degree of improvement depends on the individual patient's anatomy. In the best cases, a full suction seal is achieved and the denture feels completely secure throughout the day. In other cases, the technique significantly reduces movement compared to a conventional denture even where a full seal is not possible. John will give you an honest assessment of what to expect for your specific situation at your consultation.
Yes. While the suction technique is most transformative for the lower arch, where conventional dentures struggle most, John can apply the same precision approach to upper arch dentures too. He will advise you on what is most appropriate at your consultation.
Yes. Dream Smiles Dental offers 0% interest-free finance for up to 24 months, as well as longer-term finance options of up to 5 years for the lowest possible monthly payments. All finance options are confirmed at your consultation, which is free through this page.
