Settling In To Your New Smile

Getting your first set of dentures — or a brand new replacement pair — is a genuine life upgrade. You can smile, eat and chat without worrying about gaps or discomfort, and modern dentures look more natural than ever. But we’ll be honest with you: the first few weeks take a little getting used to. That’s completely normal. To help you settle in beautifully, here’s our friendly, practical guide to getting used to your new dentures in the first month.

Week 1: Your Mouth Is Getting To Know Them

When you first start wearing new dentures, you might notice:

A sensation that they feel “big” or bulky
Extra saliva production
Slight soreness or rubbing in spots
Your tongue feeling a little crowded

This is all very normal. Your cheeks, tongue and lips simply haven’t met your dentures yet. Most patients feel much more comfortable by the end of week one. If you have any persistent hot spots or sore areas, book a quick adjustment appointment rather than powering through — a few minor tweaks make a huge difference.

Eating With New Dentures

The golden rule: start soft, start small, start slow. For the first week or two:

Cut food into small pieces
Chew on both sides evenly to keep things stable
Avoid sticky, very hard or super crunchy foods at first
Favour softer options — scrambled eggs, pasta, soups, yoghurt, fish, mashed potato

You’ll gradually build up to eating just about anything again, but give yourself grace in the early days.

Talking With New Dentures

Some words might feel a little different to say at first, especially words with “s” or “f” sounds. A great tip is to read aloud for 10 minutes a day — a book, a newspaper, anything you enjoy. Your tongue will quickly figure out the new shape of your mouth.

Cleaning Your Dentures

Good denture care keeps them fresh and long-lasting:

Rinse thoroughly after every meal
Brush daily with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive cleaner
Soak overnight in a denture cleaning solution
Never use hot water — it can warp the shape
Still brush your gums, tongue and any remaining natural teeth
