Open Instagram for ten seconds and you’ll see another miracle whitening product promising Hollywood teeth in 14 days. Charcoal pastes, LED mouthpieces, oil pulling, baking soda hacks — the market is flooded. So what actually works?

We’ve spent the last decade whitening teeth professionally, and here’s the unvarnished truth.

Charcoal toothpaste: a hard no. It’s abrasive, removes surface stain temporarily, and over time wears down your enamel — which makes teeth look more yellow, not less, because the dentine underneath shows through. The Oral Health Foundation has been clear on this for years.

Over-the-counter whitening strips: useful but limited. Strips containing hydrogen peroxide will lift surface stains by a shade or two. They’re a reasonable budget option, but they can’t reach between teeth, results are uneven, and overuse causes sensitivity. In the UK, anything sold legally over the counter contains less than 0.1% peroxide — far weaker than professional treatments.

TikTok LED kits: mostly theatre. The blue light looks dramatic but does very little without a sufficient peroxide concentration in the gel. You’re paying for the show.
Professional in-chair whitening: the gold standard. A single 60 to 90 minute session with a 6% hydrogen peroxide gel under controlled conditions will lift teeth by 4 to 8 shades. Performed correctly by a registered dentist, it’s safe, predictable and the results are immediate.

Take-home trays from your dentist: the smart middle ground. Custom-fitted trays with a lower-concentration gel worn overnight for two weeks deliver results comparable to in-chair treatment, at typically half the cost (£395 to £595).

One non-negotiable. Whitening anywhere other than at a registered dentist or hygienist is illegal in the UK. Salon and home-kit providers operating without dental qualifications can cause permanent damage to your gums and enamel.

If you’re curious about whitening, book a consultation. We’ll assess your enamel, talk through your goals, and recommend the option that suits both your teeth and your budget.
