Dental anxiety is far more common than many people realise. Millions of adults in the UK feel nervous about visiting the dentist, and for some that anxiety is severe enough to cause them to avoid treatment altogether — sometimes for years at a time. At Dream Smiles Dental, we understand this completely, and we are genuinely committed to making every visit as calm, comfortable, and stress-free as possible.

You Are Not Alone

Anxiety around dental treatment can develop for many different reasons. Some patients carry difficult memories of past dental experiences. Others have a fear of needles or an aversion to unfamiliar sounds and sensations, or struggle with the feeling of being in a reclined chair with limited control over what is happening. Some feel embarrassed about the current state of their teeth and worry about being judged — which in itself can become a barrier to seeking help.

Whatever the root cause of your anxiety, it is nothing to be embarrassed about, and it should never stand between you and the care your teeth and gums need. The longer dental problems are left untreated, the more complex and costly they tend to become, which is precisely why finding an approach that works for you matters so much.

A Gentle, Patient-Centred Approach

For patients with mild to moderate anxiety, a thoughtful and unhurried approach to care can make a remarkable difference, often without any sedation at all. It begins with an honest conversation about your concerns, what you have experienced before, and what you would find most helpful.

Our team is experienced in working with nervous patients and will always explain what they are going to do before they do it, so there are no surprises. We use a simple agreed signal — usually a raised hand — that allows you to pause treatment at any moment if you need a moment to regroup. The pace of the appointment, the way we communicate, and the overall atmosphere in the practice are all considered with anxious patients in mind. Many people find that with this kind of support, their anxiety reduces significantly as trust builds over time.

IV Sedation for More Complex Cases

For patients with more severe dental phobia, or those undergoing longer or more complex procedures, intravenous (IV) sedation offers a deeper level of support. Sedation medication is administered directly into a vein by a qualified and experienced sedationist. The result is a deeply relaxed and drowsy state — most patients have little or no recollection of the treatment afterwards.

IV sedation is not general anaesthesia; you remain conscious throughout and can still respond to your dental team if needed. However, you will need a responsible adult to accompany you to and from the appointment, and you should plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Driving and operating machinery should be avoided for 24 hours following IV sedation.

The ability to complete treatment under sedation is often life-changing for patients who have avoided the dentist for a long time, allowing several appointments’ worth of work to be carried out in a single, stress-free session.
