Clear aligner treatment gets most of the attention. The aligners, the progress photographs, the before-and-after comparisons. But the stage that follows — retention — is the one that determines whether your results last a year or a lifetime. It is also the stage that is most commonly underestimated.

Why Do Teeth Move After Treatment?

Your teeth are not fixed rigidly in place. They sit in a periodontal ligament, a fibrous structure that connects each tooth root to the surrounding bone. When orthodontic treatment moves a tooth, the bone and ligament need time to remodel around its new position. That remodelling process takes months, and during it, the teeth have a natural tendency to drift back towards where they came from.

This is not a flaw in the treatment. It is simply how teeth behave. The purpose of a retainer is to hold everything in place while that remodelling completes — and then to keep things stable long-term.

How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer?

The common guidance is full-time wear for the first three to six months after active treatment ends, followed by night-only wear indefinitely. Indefinitely is the key word. Most patients expect to wear a retainer for a year or two and then stop. In practice, teeth can drift at any age, and long-term night-time retainer wear is the most reliable way to protect the result you worked and paid for.

What Types of Retainer Are Available?

At Dream Smiles Dental, we offer three main options. Fixed retainers are thin wires bonded to the back surface of the upper or lower teeth. They are invisible from the front, require no remembering to put in, and provide continuous stability. Fixed retainers are priced at £200 per arch.

Removable retainers are clear, thin trays that fit over your teeth — similar in feel to your aligners. They are taken out for eating and drinking and worn during sleep. Removable retainers are also £200 per arch.

Vivera retainers are Invisalign’s own branded removable retainer system, crafted from the same precision scan data as your aligner treatment. They come as a set of three for £600, which gives you replacements when one wears out, without the need for new impressions.

What Happens If You Stop Wearing Your Retainer?

This varies from person to person. Some patients see minimal movement over months without a retainer. Others notice shifting within weeks. The movement tends to be subtle at first — a slight rotation, a gap beginning to reopen — and can progress over time if nothing is done. In most cases, a new retainer can still stabilise things if caught early. After significant relapse, further aligner treatment may be needed.

Can You Combine Retainer Types?

Many patients opt for a fixed retainer on the lower teeth — where relapse is most common — and a removable retainer for the upper arch, giving them flexibility. Your clinician at Dream Smiles Dental can advise the right combination for your specific case at your completion appointment.
