John Wibberley has spent more than 50 years making dentures, and he is the Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) behind the suction dentures we make for patients at Dream Smiles Dental in Bolton. A denture is only as good as the hands that shape it, so here is a little about John and why that experience matters for your smile.

Five decades at the bench

Most people never think about who makes their dentures. Yet the difference between a denture that rubs, slips and looks false, and one that feels secure and looks natural, often comes down to the technician.

Half a century of making dentures means John understands how gums change with age, how dentures wear over time, and what separates a denture you forget you are wearing from one you are aware of all day. That kind of judgement cannot be learned from a textbook.

What a Clinical Dental Technician does

Most dental technicians only ever see your impressions. As a Clinical Dental Technician, John is registered with the General Dental Council and qualified to treat patients directly for full dentures. He sees you in person as well as making your denture, which means:

  • Taking detailed impressions and recording your bite
  • Shaping the base so it fits your gums closely and comfortably
  • Moulding the edges to create the seal a suction denture depends on
  • Choosing and arranging each tooth so your bite is balanced
  • Matching the shade, shape and size of the teeth to your face
  • Making fine adjustments after try-in so the final denture is right

Why experience matters for suction dentures

A suction denture works because its border sits snugly against the soft tissue around your gums. Get the edge slightly too short and the seal breaks. Make it slightly too long and it rubs or lifts when you move your mouth. Getting this right takes a practised eye and steady hands.

The position of the teeth matters just as much. Teeth set in the right place help the denture settle when you bite, rather than tipping it. This is where years of experience make a visible difference to how a denture performs day to day.

Teeth that look like yours

A good denture should not look like a denture. John takes care over the details that make teeth look natural: a shade that suits your skin and age, tooth shapes that suit your face, and an arrangement with the small irregularities that real teeth have. The aim is a smile that looks like it belongs to you.

Working as one team

John works closely with our dental team, so the people assessing your mouth and the person making your denture are working towards the same result. If something needs adjusting, it can be discussed and put right quickly.
