Getting your first dentures, or a new set of dentures, is a significant moment. For most patients, it brings a mix of relief and anxiety. Relief that the process is complete and the gap in your smile is finally addressed. Anxiety about what comes next: will they fit? Will they stay put? Will you be able to eat normally? The first month is an adjustment period, and knowing what to expect makes it considerably easier to navigate.

The First Few Days: Expect Unusual Sensations

A new denture sits in contact with your gum tissues in a way nothing has before. Even a perfectly fitting denture can feel bulky, strange, or over-filling in the first few days. This is entirely normal. Your mouth is adapting to a new object, and the neural pathways that register its presence as “foreign” take time to recalibrate.

Excess saliva is common in the first few days. Your mouth interprets the denture as something to be swallowed and responds accordingly. This settles for most patients within a week or two. Some patients also notice a slight change in how they sound when speaking, particularly with sounds like “s” or “f”. Reading aloud to yourself at home can speed up the adjustment significantly.

Soreness and Pressure Points

Some degree of gum soreness in the early weeks is normal and does not mean the denture is poorly made. New dentures create pressure points as they settle into position, and these can cause mild irritation or localised soreness. The important thing is to attend your follow-up adjustment appointments rather than simply tolerating discomfort.

At Dream Smiles Dental, named Best Dental Practice UK 2025 at the Private Dentistry Awards, we schedule review appointments after fitting to check for pressure points and make any necessary adjustments. A small amount of adjustment to the fitting surface can make a substantial difference to comfort. Please do not adjust a denture yourself or leave soreness unaddressed.

Eating: Build Up Gradually

For the first week or two, softer foods make the adjustment significantly easier. Scrambled eggs, soup, fish, pasta, and well-cooked vegetables are all manageable while you find your confidence. Cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing on both sides simultaneously rather than biting directly from the front can help with stability.

Over the following weeks, most patients are able to reintroduce a much wider range of foods. Very hard or extremely sticky foods remain best avoided long-term with conventional dentures, as they place significant force on the appliance. If you want fewer dietary restrictions, implant-retained options are worth discussing at your next appointment.

Keeping Your Dentures and Your Gums Clean

Daily cleaning of your denture is essential. Use a soft-bristled brush and a dedicated denture cleaner rather than regular toothpaste, which can be abrasive. Soaking overnight in a denture solution helps to keep them fresh and maintains the material. When the denture is out, brush your gums, any remaining natural teeth, and your tongue gently.

Good oral hygiene matters even without a full set of natural teeth. Your gum health affects how your denture fits and how comfortable it feels over time.

When Does It Start Feeling Normal?

For most patients, the denture starts to feel significantly more natural within four to six weeks. By three months, many patients report barely thinking about it. The adjustment curve varies, but it consistently gets easier. If you are several months in and still struggling significantly with fit or comfort, that is worth raising with your clinician, as it may indicate a need for a reline or a review of the appliance.

What Are the Options If Stability Is Still a Problem?

If conventional dentures continue to feel unstable (particularly lower full dentures, which have less surface area to grip), implant-retained overdentures offer a significant step up. As few as two implants can anchor a lower denture securely in place. It is a conversation worth having if you find conventional stability is limiting your confidence or what you can eat.
