If your dentures will not stay in, there are three main ways to fix it: denture adhesive, a suction denture, or dentures held in place by implants. Adhesive is a short term help, suction dentures are the best non-surgical option for most people, and implants give the most security but involve surgery and a bigger investment. Here is how they compare for patients at Dream Smiles Dental in Bolton.

The three options at a glance

Stability Limited, and fades during the day Good for most people The most secure
Surgery None None Yes, to place the implants
Cost Low, but ongoing Moderate Highest
Best for A top-up on a well fitting denture Most people with no natural teeth in a jaw People with very loose lower dentures or significant bone loss

Denture adhesive: a help, not a fix

Adhesive has its place. A little can add confidence on a well fitting denture. But if you need more and more of it to keep your teeth in, it is usually covering up a denture that no longer fits. Over time, a poorly fitting denture can rub and cause sore spots, so it is worth finding out why it is loose.

Suction dentures: the best place to start for most people

A suction denture is made with carefully shaped edges that sit snugly against the soft tissue around your gums, creating a seal. It is particularly helpful for lower dentures, which are hardest to keep in place. Many people find they need less adhesive, or none at all.

There is no surgery, and the cost sits well below implant options. At Dream Smiles Dental, our suction dentures are made by our Clinical Dental Technician (CDT), John Wibberley, who has more than 50 years of experience making dentures. You can read how suction dentures are made.

Implant-retained dentures: the most secure option

For some people, particularly those whose lower gum and bone have shrunk a great deal, even the best denture cannot create a strong seal. In that case, two or more implants placed in the jaw can hold the denture firmly. It is a bigger commitment, involving minor surgery and healing time, but the difference in security can be significant. Our guide to implant-retained overdentures explains more, or see our dental implants page.

How to choose

  • If your denture fits well and you only want a little extra confidence, adhesive may be enough.
  • If your denture moves, rubs or needs adhesive every day, a suction denture is usually the first thing to consider.
  • If you have tried a good denture and it still will not stay in, or you want the most secure result, implants are worth discussing.

The right answer depends on your mouth, your health and your budget. That is exactly what a consultation is for, and we will always tell you honestly which option we think suits you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start with suction dentures and move to implants later?

Yes. Many people start with a suction denture. If you decide on implants later, we can talk through whether your denture can be adapted or whether a new one is needed.

Are suction dentures suitable if I still have some teeth?

Suction dentures are for jaws with no natural teeth. If you still have some teeth, a partial denture is usually the better choice. Read our guide to partial and full dentures.

Is finance available?

Yes. We offer finance options so you can spread the cost of your treatment, subject to status.
