Suction dentures are made over several appointments, from an initial assessment through detailed impressions, a wax try-in and a final fit. The extra care at the impression stage is what creates the seal that holds the denture in place. Here is what happens at each step at Dream Smiles Dental in Bolton, where our dentures are made by our Clinical Dental Technician (CDT), John Wibberley, who has more than 50 years of experience.

1. Consultation and assessment
We start by looking at your mouth, your gums and any dentures you wear now. We ask what bothers you, whether that is movement, soreness, eating or appearance. This tells us whether a suction denture is likely to work well for you, or whether another option, such as implant-retained dentures, would serve you better.
2. First impressions
A first set of impressions gives an accurate model of your gums. From this, a custom tray is made that fits your mouth closely, ready for the more detailed impressions to come.
3. Detailed impressions that record movement
This is the step that makes a suction denture different. Using the custom tray, we take impressions while you move your lips, cheeks and tongue, swallow and open your mouth. This records how the soft tissue around your gums moves in everyday life.
The result is a precise map of where the edge of your denture can sit to create a seal without rubbing or being dislodged when you talk and eat.
4. Recording your bite and choosing your teeth
Next, we record how your jaws meet and the right height for your bite. We also choose the shade, shape and size of your new teeth, so they suit your face and look natural.
5. The wax try-in
Before anything is finished, you try in a version of your denture with the teeth set in wax. You can see how it looks, check how it feels and how you speak, and tell us what you would like to change. Adjustments at this stage are straightforward, so it is worth being honest.
6. Making the final denture
Once you are happy, John makes the final denture. He shapes the edges carefully to match the detailed impressions and sets the teeth so your bite is balanced. This is the craftsmanship that turns accurate records into a denture that stays in place.
7. Fitting and review
At your fitting, we check the fit, the seal and your bite, and show you how to put the denture in, take it out and look after it. We then see you again to make any small adjustments as your mouth settles. Sore spots in the first weeks are common and easily eased.
How many appointments will I need?
Most people need several appointments over a few weeks. The exact number depends on your mouth and whether any extra steps are needed, and we will give you a clear plan at your consultation.
Settling in
Every new denture takes some getting used to. Many people find the seal feels more secure as their mouth adapts over the first few weeks. Our guide to your first month with new dentures has practical tips for eating, speaking and comfort.
Frequently asked questions
Do the impressions hurt?
No. They can feel a little strange, and the movements may feel unusual, but they are not painful.
Can I keep wearing my old denture while the new one is made?
Usually, yes. We will let you know if anything about your current denture needs to change in the meantime.
What if my new denture does not feel right?
Tell us. Reviews and adjustments are part of the process, and small changes often make a big difference.
